Jon stared at her. “The Satisfaction sank?”

“Yes. If Captain Morgan finds out I’m a girl, he’ll blame me.” Fortune was shaking. “He’ll keelhaul us both.”

Jon gulped. What if Blackheart Bill revealed their secret?

Captain Morgan rounded everyone up. “The victory is still ours. I will take command of the sloop, the Fury. Some of you will join me, and others will be divided amongst the remaining ships. Now load up the treasure.”

Rusty Pete stepped forward. “All of you mates who plundered Panama City, you’ll strip before boarding—we gotta make sure you handed over all your booty. Don’t want anyone hidin’ nothing.”

Good thing Fortune doesn’t have to strip, Jon thought, or it would be over.

After the plunder was distributed between the thirty pirate captains, men were assigned to ships, and the fleet sailed away.

Jon thought of all who’d lost their lives for gold—on both sides of the battle. He could still picture the burning town and the people who’d lost their homes and knew he never wanted to be a pirate.

“You’ll be mighty pleased with your share of the plunder,” Captain Morgan told his crew. “I’ll keep it safe in my treasure chests. We’ll divide it up when we reach Port Royal.”

“We won’t get any,” Fortune muttered. “It’s terrible to be a slave.”

“We’ll escape in Port Royal,” Jon said. “Or die trying.”

“Forget that victory or death stuff,” Fortune muttered. “It doesn’t work for me.”

Blackheart Bill loomed over them. “You’re a curse to us all, little lady,” he whispered, glaring at Fortune. “The ransom is now 150,000 silver coins each.”

Fortune’s eyes filled with tears. She dashed them away.
